We encourage genetic counselors to learn about additional important factors to consider on their cultural and linguistic competence journey. These factors are “stick” approaches….what happens if you or your genetics center do not comply with national and state laws protecting individuals with limited English proficiency, minorities, individuals with various abilities, etc. Genetic counselors and their centers located in institutions that receive any federal funds (most everyone) must know about and comply with these laws.
In addition, we provide links to emerging state laws requiring cultural competence education for health care providers, diverse health care professional recruitment, and other related topics. We encourage genetic counselors to maintain awareness of the activities in his/her state, and even to advocate for these initiatives.
